Every gardener must choose which garden tools they require to best cultivate their own garden. I started out with a few tools purchased from garage sales and on Amazon. Now that I’m a handful of years into my gardening journey, I’ve determined there are some garden tools that I can’t live without. If you’re just getting your start gardening, this gardening supply guide will outline my top 10 garden tools that every gardener should have. Gather of few of these items and you’ll be well on your way to gardening with ease and success!
1. Garden Hand Trowel

A hand trowel leads this gardening supply guide because it’s a basic garden tool that every gardener will need. A hand trowel is a hand shovel that’s great for planting new plants into the ground, repotting plants and overall digging in your garden soil. I usually have a few of these laying around because I use them so much that I’ll often set one down and forget where I placed it!
2. Spade Shovel

This is often referred to as sharp shooter shovel. It’s a narrow shovel and is the one l use when I need to get deeper into the ground. I often use it for transplanting perennials. Its narrow width and sharp blade allows for getting down deep into the dirt quickly without much force. A spade shovel is also great when edging a new garden bed. It’s really the only long handled shovel I ever use in my garden which is why it definitely is one of my gardening supply essentials.
3. Pruning Shears

Pruning shears are useful for trimming and cutting back plants and dead-heading flowers throughout the growing season. It’s part of the gardening supply guide because it’s used in my garden during multiple seasons. Come fall and even winter, a pair of pruning shears are a useful garden tool during the garden clean-up process. I even use my shears when cutting hosing during installation of water drip lines for my garden.
4. Loppers

Loppers are just like pruning shears but with very long handles. Where pruning shears are great for trimming smaller plants, loppers allow you to cut back woodier branches and twigs. I don’t use my loppers nearly as often as my pruning shears, but they come in handy when I need to cut a thicker tree branch out of the way. The long length of the arms allows the leverage needed to trim thicker branches with ease.
5. Hand Cultivator Rake

A garden hand cultivator is a small handheld rake with three metal claws. This garden tool is useful to breaking up and loosening dirt before setting in new plants. It can be used for creating a line in the dirt for sprinkling in new seed. It can also be used to break open plastic bags of mulch and soil.
6. Hand Garden Weeder

A garden weeder tool is great for removing garden weeds at the base of the weed. This handy gadget grabs the weed right at the top of the root. Using the ground for leverage, you then have a better chance of pulling the weed out of the ground root and all. As with all weeding, it’s always easiest right after a rainfall when the ground is wet.
7. Garden Scissors

Garden scissors are part of my gardening supplies guide because of how useful they are in vegetables gardens during harvest time. They can be used for cutting salad greens, trimming green beans or cutting any vegetable from its vine or plant when it’s time to harvest. It’s a good idea to wash the scissors in between uses to keep plant potential pathogens and bacteria from spreading from plant to plant.
8. Gardening Gloves

There are many types of gardening gloves available for working in the dirt and throughout your garden. I have a few pairs myself, but I love these Pine Tree bamboo gloves because they are breathable yet protective in all the right areas. They also fit rather tightly (yet comfortably) against your skin. I’ve had other gardening gloves that had a more loose fit and I’d tend to get more dirt inside of them as I was working. These Pine Tree gloves are my favorite choice for gardening right now!
9. Hose and Sprayer

As you get further into your gardening journey, you’ll find the need for multiple sources of water to keep your garden maintained. Especially when gardening in the dry climate of Colorado, you’ll probably want to include a drip line watering system for the daily water requirements of your plants and vegetables. But there will always be a need for a regular hose and sprayer for hand watering pots or other areas of the garden. My favorite choice when purchasing a hose for this purpose is a flexible lightweight garden hose.
This type of hose has a polyester fabric cover with an internal latex hose. So it eliminates the hose kinking and is very light weight and easy to maneuver. My favorite feature on this particular hose is that is comes with a shut off valve at the end of the hose where you attach the spray nozzle. This has come in handy for me so much when attaching a sprinkler to this hose. Sometimes you have areas of the lawn where you need to reduce the sprinkler water pressure so as to not to overspray somewhere. This handy feature saves you from running back to the hose bib at the house to adjust the sprinkler spray. You can adjust it right where the sprinkler attaches to the hose!
10. Gardening Potting Table

Now that you have all of the gardening supplies essentials, you will need a place to store these things and keep your garden tools organized. We love this potting table work bench for the garden. Not only does it have a drawer, shelf and enclosed area for storing garden tools, pots and gardening soil, but its galvanized metal work bench is a great work surface to use when repotting plants and tending to your garden. Not to mention, it looks great and can be an additional element of style and function in your backyard garden.
